Description:
SolFocus provides systems to enable solar energy generation that is cost competitive with energy generation from traditional fossil fuel sources. To achieve this objective, SolFocus has developed new and leveraged existing technologies that eliminate the cost barriers to solar energy. SolFocus has an expanding portfolio of products and technologies including solar concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems, intelligent tracking systems for CPV and flat panel PV systems, and will be expanding into other solar technologies. SolFocus is a global company with headquarter operations in Mountain View, California and Madrid, Spain. The company also has research, product development, and manufacturing operations/partnerships in China, India, Arizona and California.
The company’s concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) technology combines the record-setting efficiency of multi-junction solar cells with patented high concentration, compound-reflective optical design to concentrate a large amount of sunlight onto a small amount of active solar material. SolFocus’ CPV technology uses only a fraction of the active, or expensive, material of traditional PV systems. The technology is streamlined and focused on being highly reliable, manufacturable, and low cost. |

1. Concentrator Photovoltaic System
|
| NAICS: 221119
|
| The SolFocus Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) System is an array of 30 CPV panels. Each panel incorporates power units comprised of primary and secondary mirrors, a non-imaging optical element and a triple-junction solar cell. The primary and secondary mirrors focus the sun’s energy 500 times onto the optical rod, which guides the light onto a solar cell twice as efficient as the average silicon cell. The streamlined design has minimal components, no moving parts and passive cooling; which results in high reliability and manufacturability. Using just 1/1,000th the active material found in a standard solar panel, the system is mostly aluminum and glass, both of which are easily sourced worldwide. The SolFocus panels are compact and fully enclosed, protecting the cells and reflectors from environmental degradation and providing high system safety. In combination these factors result in a system with very high output and that is highly reliable. |
